Preface: I have not been to GenIndy, but I did go to the old one in Milwaukee 9? times. Things may have changed, but I doubt it.
Unless it is something pretty unique (signed books, original artwork) you probably don't want to buy anything from GenCon. While some companies offer discounts on their stuff, it's few and far between. Most of it is store price or higher. TSR used to sell everything new at MSRP which is often much higher than a local shop's actual price. WOTC was worse. They'd charge you out the ass because Billy Bob Joe Earl was there and would sign a card for you.
All of the weapon stuff can be ordered straight out of Atlanta Cutlery (or the subsidiary that does fantasy weapons) and shipped to your house cheaper (and easier than lugging it a few hundred miles).
Also, if you are going and are gonna buy cool shineys (assuming the vendor doesn't run out) wait until Sunday to buy it. They tend to not want to pack stuff so they will either cut the price or toss in freebies with it.
If you have easily broken/bent stuff, I'd suggest mailing it to yourself. Yes it's gonna cost more, but if it gets hosed, you can make an insurance claim on it (artwork is the major thing).
I'm sure there is something I am forgetting, but well, by definition, I can't remember it right now.
