What do you do for a living?

Postby Tasan » Sun Jan 27, 2002 6:49 am

Personally, I kinda wonder where everyone stands in this little world of ours.

I'm technically not a student atm, though I pretty much live the life.

I work at a liquor store, about 25 hours a week, and am looking for more work somewhere else.

Anyhow, I would like to know about other people's chosen field of work.

Software Developer

Although recently they've started to call me a 'software architect' since I'v been spending most of my time the past 9 months not coding but helping oversee the technical aspects of our project (coming up with build and deployment strategies, managing our large project's presence in clearcase with labels and branches and views, making 'stuff' like the debugger work when we're running our apps in a tuxedo environment).

It's so much fun!

I do computer support for a call center in a large insurance company, and (hopefully!) sometime soon they're going to put me thru the classes to be a mainframe programmer Image
I also used to run my own computer consulting company, but that's now a sideline thing until I can figure out which niche I want to fit in.

I'm the chief of security (that is the actual title my bosses use for me not something i chose) for a lounge on Long Island New York. i het to smack people around when they are bad...pay is alright. the lack of respect sucks. above all the worst part prolly is the lawyers, courts, judges, and time put into that. but overall it isnt bad. i could be a bum i guess.

I'm a route sales representative for Wonderbread/Hostess. I get paid on a $403/week salary plus an 8% commission of all my sales.

I get up for work at 3 AM, usually end up getting home around 3-4 PM. I drive one of those goofy lil trucks around and deliver bread etc (Gormal don't you say a damn word :P). It's a lot harder work than it looks, especially having to be out in the elements and be constantly thinking in your head what you're going to order for which store etc.

All in all I bring home around 600-700 a week...

Until I finish my manuscript... Image

Oh my gawd, this question would have to come up and I would have to feel obligated to answer.

I'm a Customer Care and Service Consultant for Qwest.

If you have a problem with phone/dsl/pcs etc.. and live in the Midwest to Western U.S. and call Qwest to bitch and moan, I'm who you'd probably end up talking to. After we transfer you to 20 other people who won't do a damned thing for you. Image

This is the reason I started this post. I was honestly laughing so hard some people in the room thought I was nuts. I think that's awesome that "Yasden sells bread". Hehe.

Jack of all trades? Try this:

I have been a plumber,
I have been a lumberjack,
I have been an avionics electrician that knows every wire in the f14 fighter jet from nose to the little white light on the port stabilizer,
I have been a computer repairman,
I have been an alcaholic with visions of killing myself on various occasions,
I have been a sheet metal worker,
I have been an electro-hydraulic mechanic,
I have been an HVAC mechanic (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning for those that don't know trade jargon),
I have been a network administrator,
I have been a customer service representative,
I have been a fork-lift driver,
I have been a prep cook and line cook at a resturaunt with over 250 menu items,
I have been a secretary,
I have been a security guard,
I have been a deli clerk........

And now? After All of those wonderful jobs, and after al lthe taxes I have paid to the American government, I am a full time college student in my 2nd semester at the age of 26. Thanks to the wonderful people that keep on paying those taxes, I am going to college tuition free, and I get paid $608 a month, and an extra $700 twice a semester.
What is my major you might ask after seeing all the shit I have done? I am majoring in the one thing that you may notice is the easiest thing to do out of all the jobs I listed: Network Administration.

yay me

I roam around swamps and lurk under bridges. I also poach snakes and dig great troll holes. I'm an expert at ambush and often drag fat humans to my hole where I fight other trolls over who gets the biggest piece. I'm adept at claw-to-claw combat. What kinda halfwit company uses ISDN anyways? Image DSL is the waive of the future, beats cable in most respects, specially if you have a consistant 7M transfer rate

Uh, HP is the halfwit company, and the users were people who had a business need for a reliable/faster than modem connection, yet were too far from a CO to qualify for DSL, or it was not yet available in their area.

Besides, some of these people had these connections for upwards of 5 years, and had not yet switched to something faster. On top of that, we didn't introduce VPN connectivity to HP until mid 2001, so consumer DSL/Cable connectivity was not an option.

Welp.. I'm a full-time student (math and comparative literature major).. Part-Time, I'm in the highest student position at my university's computer helpdesk (my actual title is a bit misleading, Consultant Leader / Admin. Assistant.. it makes it look like I'm an important powerful consultant, while at the same time a secretary, neither of which are true, heh)..
And in the fall, I'll be in law school.. just don't know where yet.. heh

I am a full time student, currently working on my break as a Mining Engineer, which funnily enough is what I will be in approximately 8 months, and 100 pages time. I get to design dirt farms, coal farms, and also get to blow things up. I enjoy watching things get destroyed by big machines, call me simple minded if you like.

In my ulterior life, I am a Retail Sales Officer [it doesn't come with a badge Image] for Telstra - Australia's largest and most expensive telecommunications companies. Image And when I'm not preaching that cell phone radiation is good for you, i'm at the beach. Or in front of a computer. Unfortunately I don't have the money to invest in a wireless network so I can do both.
