RL Pets

Postby Kossuth » Thu May 23, 2002 5:25 pm

Just curious what kind of pets y'all have. My wife and I have two cats, but I imagine some of you might have dogs, mice, snakes, who knows?

Anyway, here's a couple of pictures of my cats Image

Anastasia (she's about 5 years old):
Pic 1
Pic 2 (the CD case in the pic was to show a size comparison.. she's not a very big cat)

Katie (aka Katarina, born 2/26/02):
Katie's first pic
Katie hiding on the bookshelf
Guess she had the sniffles?

Amazing thing is that these two cats aren't related, but look like they could be mother and daughter. We saw Katie at the shelter and had to bring her home so 'stasia would have a friend.

If you guys have pics of your pets, I think it'd be cool to share them in this thread.

We have two cats, Felix and Oscar. Felix is your typical lap sitting, food scarfing, nap king. Oscar is a trouble maker. They have their own page here:

http://www.macwilliamson.com/FelixOscar.htm

The 'Oscar in Trouble' link on the side bar will lead you to the most amusing picture.

Dogs own cats. Cats are selfish, shit in your house (and on my balcony), you can't play with 'em much and they whine. They suck. Dogs are unswervingly loyal, friendly, playful and protective. Man's best friend.

I'll wait for this to degenerate into a dogs vs cats argument.

Cherzra, you guessed it, dislikes cats.

Cats rule.

I absolutely detest dogs. I simply don't trust anyone who's that loyal.

I have 2 cats, i hate dogs.

I have a blue russian that is absolutely the most beautiful cat I have ever seen. He is more loyal, loving, and NOT SELFISH than any dog I have ever had.

I also have a pure black cat named lucifer who is the most evil thing on the face of the earth. But he's also one of my favorites.

Dogs are loyal cuz they are dumb Image cats are much smarter, plus, no drool (usually) and when a cat licks something its delicate and not full of slobber.. dog licks your bowl of ice cream you accidently left out and its gone.. cats are more graceful, they are good at catching annoying birds an mice and cocharoaches, and killing spiders.. dogs are good at killing your new shoes, balls, and generally destroying everything you don't want them to.. btw.. my cat was trained to poop outside Image and never on balconies :P (she wouldn't leave our yard) anyway, ive had
Fish (both tropical/marine)
A snake (5ft florida king snake)
several cats
a few dogs (these were my step moms really, which really made me dislike dogs more, they were well trained/behaved and pure breeds but still..)

My cats go in the litter box as trained, I give them exercise with cat toys a couple times a day, and they only whine if they can't get to us (like if we close them in a room or something).

Your mileage with other people's cats may vary, but I don't have those problems. Image

My husband loves cats, I do not. It started out with him finding a stray kitten, barely old enough to be weaned, and of course he brought her home. She was tortoiseshell, and looked like the color of a glass of Pepsi when you hold it up to the light, so somehow we got the name "Bubbles" out of that. Shortly after the hubby discovered an infatuation with the cartoon "The Powerpuff Girls" and another stray kitten, whom he promptly named "Buttercup."

I really don't like cats.

Not too long ago he came home, and since we live in a loft apartment, he was able to peer over the railing of the stairs with great big eyes and tell me what a wonderful person I was without me being able to see what he was holding in his arms. It turned out to be - not a stray kitten - oh no, but a full grown and very pregnant stray cat. He wanted to name her "Blossom" but she was mean and attacked Bubbles and Buttercup at every chance. She had four kittens, so I managed to force him to find homes for the mama cat and two of the kittens, but we still have Mojo Jojo and one he named "Demon" running around the apartment.

I've had the perfect dog in my life, and once you've had the perfect dog, nothing else quite compares, certainly not cats.

I mean that, they may do their needs in a litter box, but it's still in your house! I mean, gross Image I'd rather walk my dog several times a day...

There is a serious argument on which of the species is smarter. It all depends on your biased POV. However, one of my favorite quotes regarding cats is:

"Cats thus have the distinction of being the only animal species ecologically dependent
on an allegedly superior race (e.g., us) to save it from itself." (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_009a.html)

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR><font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">

Drool is different by species. Hounds and rotts drool more than terriers and retrievers.

That's because of the genetic makeup of the dog, they're bred to eat quickly. Hence the term "wolfing" something down.

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR><font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">

My sister's westie does the same thing. And I've seen her cat fall on her ass plenty of times.

I've had more things destroyed by cats. While a dog may chew your shoes, cats take out couches and chairs.

I dunno if it's gonna go too far in this direction, but...

I didn't intend this to turn into cats vs. dogs when I started this thread. FYI, when we get out of this dumb condo and into a house with a backyard, we're gonna get a puppy, too.

Let there be no debate, they both are awesome. I just wanted to see what people gots, and to see pictures if anyone's got them. Image

Cats are great pets for people who don't have a ton of time to invest in a pet and who travel alot and are single. Dogs are great for the opposite. Ferrets however, are vile demons from the lower reaches of hell, sent to earth to torture humanity feeding off their hate, and pain, their longevity extended by your desire for them to just die.

Under US law, the site apparently showed an individual killing a cat, skinning it and some other stuff. Yes, that is illegal under US law. It also isn't something Sojourn promotes :P

ugh.

being a photographer and being a major contributer last thing i need to see is more pet picts. it's especially lame when some of these guys bitch and moan about how sub par a $2200 digital camera is, spend $5500 on one and do nothing but shoot their cat pinching a loaf on the carpet.

i personally have a chihuahua and a dachsun-bulldog mix, as well as three cats.

be damned if i'll take any picts of thm, that's what mom's are posed to do :P

I have a purebred silky terrier puppy
My brother's friend, Fernando, named him Silky Smooth because he had the softest hair imaginable. We all call him Silky, though I call him Silky Pup for some reason. Silky terriers are an offbreed of Yorkshire terriers and bigger than their cousins. My puppy is supposed to be on average 10 inches long and 10 pounds, but I think we gave him too much of the growth vitamin the veterinarian prescribed for him (he was the runt of the litter) because he is now twice the size of an average silky terrier. Last measurements at the vet shocked us. Silky is 20 inches long and about 15 pounds, but extremely healthy. He just turned 7 months yesterday Image

Woo cherz, hehe Image
My puppy is a pain in the ass because my mother spoiled him rotten. I laugh because she will say to him, "I can't give you any more treats from my plate because your sister and brother will get mad at me!" Heh.
He is a cutie though, and when he isn't chewing my shoes and tearing up paper towel, he is quite loving and always sleeps in my bed, on his back, with his head on my pillow. Image

"The Egyptians once worshipped cats, and they have never forgotten this." Unknown source.

I've had about every kind of pet, grew up on a farm, did the 8 foot long Indian Python thing and fed it bunnies. Fish, horses, dogs, cats... etc.

My current pet was born in 1996, it weighs about 3500 lbs, and is about 6'6" tall. Its red and black, and it costs about $10 a week to feed it. I don't typically have to pick up after it much, and when I do, it usually means I have to take it to the doctor. It goes nearly anywhere with me, and can get me through some pretty serious scrapes.

What's the weirdest thing your pet has eaten and/or vomited back up? Lovely question, I know, but animals eat some pretty crazy stuff.

My dog ate the zipper off of one of the cushions on our couch. That and earthworms. His sister (who chases flashlight beams, that's so cool) once ate and regurgitated a mole, and one time, she consumed a tin pie plate.

I'm sure you people out there have interesting stories, and I'm bored out of my mind. I really don't wanna do work. Second day of summer school classes, and I'm already slacking and procrastinating. Baaaaad.

I have an 8-year-old rottweiler named Kobi. She's the friendliest dog in the world if you're a friend, but I wouldn't want to be the stranger who tries to break into my house. On another point:

Kia wrote: Drool is different by species. Hounds and rotts drool more than terriers and retrievers.

It also depends on characteristics within the breed -- more specifically whether the dog has loose jowls or long cheeks that hang over the bottom jaw. And most dogs will drool when presented with food (Pavlov's experiment). Case in point, my Kobi has tight cheeks -- most "real" rottweilers do -- the dogs that were bred to the German or AKC standard as opposed to these behemoths they try to sell as rottweilers in the states that are bred purely for size (hence loose cheeks and more drool ala St. Bernards) and neglect the breed's excellent agility.

He will come over to our 16 month old daughter and ask to be pet/abused/hugged. When she cries he comes to tell us. He can't wait to see her in the morning (he knocks on her door at about 6:15 AM).

If our daughter is crying all we have to do is say "where's louie" and she stops and looks for the cat.

Our cat is great. Couldn't ask for a more loving, social companion. Will even fetch. Gives cats a bad name.

My pet rock, Rocky is more loyal than dogs or cats. Take for instance, he is alwayz there at home waiting for me, he doesnt' make a racket at night, he's a good listener and never inturrupts, doesn't tear up furniture or clothes, i never have to take him for a walk, and he finds his own food. What more could you ask for. He's in the shape of a turtle, but never hides in his shell. Rocky's my best friend, yes he is! *huddles in the corner with a white rock* ..my best friend...

I have lots of pets.

I have a 3 horses, 5 Beagles, 4 chickens, 1 rabbit, 2 cats, and one woman. I would like to get an ostrage someday. I wonder if there is a market for ostrage. Does anybody know? (Another possible pole topic!)

From my experience, Beagles (hounds) don't drool on there own. They tend to drool around food if they know they are going to get half of what your eating everytime they see you eating. This concept applies to just about any breed of dog. Cats may not drool but the stupid things have other annoying habbits. My cats live outside all year round. There job is to keep the neighbor cats away from my place and to keep the rodent populations in check. The stupid beagles are to busy sniffing for rabbit poops to deter any neighbor cats or rodents. Horse shit is a particular delicacy of beagles if you must know.

I would include pictures of my my animals but I don't have any available.

There was a small farm down the road from where I live that was shut down last year because apparently Asians would come over and slaughter sheep, pigs, and roomer has it stray dogs and cats on the side of the road for everyone to see.

Almost 13 years ago I gave that Halfling some of you know as Bimble the boot - kicked him to the curb because he bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle w/o asking me. (led to a huge fight) Next day I was still furious, so I sold the motorcycle on the local AM radio stations "Talk Swap" show for pennies. I took the money and bought him a German Sheperd that he named, "Harley". I was feeling mean! We eventually got back together.

Thirteen years later Bimble and I are still together, and that damn dog Harley is my pride and joy. She has hip dysplasia and arthritis now, but still follows me out to the horse barn every morning. I have to carry her up and down stairs to get her there, but she insists on walking through the pain the rest of the way. I gave her the job "check the horses" as a puppy, and she would run like mad to the barn and guard the barn till I got there. She even learned to run them from the nearby grazing exercise fields back to the barn on that command. She has taken that job seriously her whole life, its her honor and pride.

We have two horses, an Amercian Quarter, a Arabian - also have several cats that live around the area, loads of ducks that stay here all year in the pond. We claim none as pets, because Harley claims and protects is all. Over the years she has expanded her duties to guarding and looking after all the animals we have. They belong to her.

There is no 3W for Harley!
