Re: No One's Raising Taxes Right Now
does that include sweet federal benefits or taxes?
Re: No One's Raising Taxes Right Now
Based on his previous posts, I don't get the impression Todrael takes into account employee benefits such as healthcare, defined benefit pension, etc when discussing compensation. I would guess that it is a before taxes figure.
Re: No One's Raising Taxes Right Now
Federal salary tables are publicly available on the OPM website. We work for you, so this is stuff you guys get to know. I'm a GS-12 step 2 in 'Rest of US', basically as high as I can go unless I enter management. I was including a 5% matching contribution to my 401k, since it's a straight cash benefit. Here are the health care premiums for federal employees. Much like social security, I don't think the pension will stick around.
Anyone else care to share, or are we still bashing federal employee compensation?

I only make $62K... so I'm still on board for a little bashing. ;)

Re: No One's Raising Taxes Right Now
To be fair, part of the reason why Federal healthcare is so expensive is that the Federal government is stuffed to the gills with old fogeys.

The average age where I work is 50; there's got to be a bunch of 70+ to offset new hires.
From the premiums I linked above, the most popular plan (Blue Cross Blue Shield Standard) costs the government $363 for one person and $815 for family coverage per month. I'm not sure how that compares to the cost of private industry employer-provided insurance.

That is not a bad price depending on age/gender.

(HD = High Deductible)
For comparison, Individual HD and Standard premiums for a late 20ish male are about $75 and $150 a month on the open market.
Btw, Todrael, you may want to look into other insurers in the Fed plans, they may save you some money.
Re: No One's Raising Taxes Right Now
I said 'costs the government' - the premiums to employees are lower than that, as shown by Teflor. The dollar figure I quoted was the 'benefit' portion.

Re: No One's Raising Taxes Right Now
I think my point was that the health care premiums for coverage of Federal employees are insanely high, compared to the individual insurance costs for a late 20's male.
It's indicative of just how old the Federal Government workforce is. Ancient, in fact: 47 years is the average. (source)
For every Federal employee that is 24 years old, there are three that are 55.
