Mom arrested for child abuse

Postby kiryan » Fri Feb 25, 2011 6:49 pm

Mom "fell asleep" with her child in her bed. Child gets a hold of a "water bottle" with an alcoholic drink in it. Mom arrested for being "neglectful".

This is wrong in my opinion unless she has a history. Accidents happen... and should not be criminal.

I'm especially waiting for your reply Sarvis.

Seems a little bit much. It was an accident and she called 911 immediately after she woke up. You don't really want to create a situation where otherwise good parents make a mistake and are scared to call for medical help.
Having said all that, the situation has been handled, so this thread is pretty much at an end. -Kossuth

Oh don't worry, Kiryan believes that's impossible.

Every parent makes mistakes. The system tends to want to believe that parents have a camera system in every room, eyes in the back of their heads, don't need to sleep, and should be mindful of a child's actions every second of the day. I can't name one parent who hasn't lost their child for a few moments, dropped a baby, let their child fall off a slide, etc. Shit happens; that's life; live and learn. I agree, if it was habitual, then there is something wrong.

Why the hell is there an alcoholic drink in a water bottle near a toddler? Couple of bad judgement calls there.

That may be so, Tef, but we all make bad judgments all the time -- children just amplify them in perspective.

The bigger question is why the child liked it enough to drink it.

Reaction to alcohol seems to be a bit learned... I've noticed babies and toddlers appear to not really reject the taste of beer and many hard alcohols until they get to be about 2.5 to 4 years old.

I've known several kids who don't seem to show a significant reaction if they lick a finger or lick the rim or even get a small sip. Stuff to which I have a distasteful reaction. There are so many stories of toddlers drinking shots and grabbing mommy's glass for it to all be bullshit. I apparently downed a couple shots of tequila when I was 2.
