At the time I rolled Ragorn, I had never read The Hobbit or any of the other Lord of the Rings books. It wasn't until I was level 15 or 16 that someone told me Tolkien had a ranger named Aragorn. It's come up a few times since then, but I don't think people immediately associate me with Tolkien's homey anymore

Hmm. You all read "Wheel of Time" that many times? I lost interest after the first couple books. I wish Jordan would return to writing Conan, his Conan novels are amazing.
If you want to read a real epic fantasy series, check out the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R. Martin (first book is A Game of Thrones); best series to come along in decades, fantasy wise.

Will have to check that out Malacar.
I'd also recommend Jack Vance. A good fantasy book by Vance is "Tales of the Dying Earth"; in particular the Cugel chapters...
It's sad how few people know of him, and he's up there with Sturgeon, Asimov and Heinlein.
My favorite all time fantasy/sci-fi novel is "Treason" by Orson Scott Card.
