Coolest RPG movie(s)?
Coolest RPG movie(s)?
I just wondered what you people thought was a great RPG-type movie, or decent fantasy/sci-fi movie. After the sad release of Dungeons and Dragons I've been looking for videos to build up my library, preferably on DVD..so help me compile a list of great RPG-type movies! Btw, I can't wait for the Final Fantasy movie to come out.
This topic came up while I was at the video store and they didn't have:
<h1>KRULL</h1>
Boy was I mad! I love that movie!

ROFL, Malacar!!! I love your new sig now.
Hmmm... Best fantasy type movie? I gotta say the Conan movies were cool. C'mon, who doesn't like Ah-nuld? The D&D movie was too painful to watch. I can't believe there wasn't even 1 magic missile! The fantasy genre is hurting for a good movie and I hope LotR fills that huge void. There really needs to be a really good Forgotten Realms movie. *sigh*

I hope lord of the rings is better then the d&d movie which shouldn't be hard. Although I don't really like the books anyway. I wonder with all the good writers like salvatore, cunningham, wiess and hickman just to name a few why couldn't they come up with a good story for the d&d movie. I think Liegashia summed it up best when he said you know all those people that thought people who played d&d are dorks well if they see this movie they still will. Anyway my favorite fantasy movie is either Return of the Jedi or Monty Python quest for the holy grail.
Army of Darkness!
'What's the matter? You found me attractive once!'

Army of Darkness (1993, kickass one liners)
Merlin (1988)
Dragonslayer (1981, a real gem)
The Beastmaster (1982)
The Neverending Story (original title "Die Unendliche Geschichte", 1984, another gem)
Other stuff
Fire and Ice (loved it at first, but gets duller every time I watch it, 1983 - animation)
Warriors of the Wind (original title "Kaze no tani no Naushika", 1984 - animation)
Krull, Willow, other stuff people mentioned

I dunno why, but my friends think Dragonheart was the best.. Personally I didn't really like it. Decent CG with the dragon, but the acting and story lacked, imho..
Anyone ever see 'The Sword and the Rose' with Rutger Hauer? It was about a mercenary band that takes over a castle and a soon-to-be princess, corrupts her some, then get decimated by a plague that was insinuated upon them by an enemy throwing chunks of plagued canine meat into their water well... Very cool movie actually. I won't ruin it for those that haven't, but it doesn't have a happy ending, I'll say that much. Highly recommended.
Ladyhawke. Good flick.

Malacar - French kissin midgets, and damn proud of it. Oh yeah... My comments can offend you now, I don't care anymore. Have a day.

Nausicaa was good, but the manga was a lot better than the anime.. like just about every other anime/manga out there. Vampire Hunter D was fun, I wish they'd make a sequel.
The original Record of Lodoss Wars was excellent, but the "sequel" Chronicles of the Heroic Knight was lacking.
Dragonslayer was definitely great for its time, and Willow is excellent (there's a book series that acts as a sequel to Willow, but it's not very good).

Hey Cherz, why exactly is gladiator not a fantasy movie? Lets see....its not based on a true story, it doesnt have sci-fi creatures and guns and stuff, but it does have a kick ass story and some kick ass fights, the only reason it wouldn't be considered "fantasy" is because it did use real city names but hey its still fantasy.
Just curious.

Because it's a movie about a Roman who became a gladiator? I fail to see any supernatural creatures, magic or what else. It's just a movie about Roman who fights in an arena, like Ben Hur and Spartacus before it. If anything, it's a movie for historical reference - not sword-slinging, magic-weaving fantasy.
"Fantasy" movies.
First off I think we need to define the term "Fantasy Movie". Fantasy can mean many things to many people. In this particular listing I'm going to use the term "Fantasy" to mean Mid-Evil, or Dark Ages. The stuff "Dungeons and Dragons" was based on. I wanted to state that because while going through my very large collection of movies I started pulling out titles like Indiana Jones, Jurassic park, Evil Dead II, Heavy Metal, and Blade. While all of the movies I have mentioned are "Fantasy" based movies they are not true to the topic at hand. Keeping with the theme of the mud I have taken the time to build what "I" think is the all time top 20 listing of "Fantasy" based movies of all time. I felt that animation was not a reason to leave the movie off the list because it still has the same theme and appeal that a regular movie would.
Because listing out all of these movies in a #1 to #20 would be far to hard, and no one would agree fully, I felt I would just list them out as my TOP 20 Favorite movies.. But not in any order.
1. Original LoTR's (Series, Animation)
2. Conan the Barbarian
3. Conan the Destroyer
4. Blood & Iron
5. LadyHawke
6. DragonSlayer
7. Lodoss Wars (Series, Animation)
8. Red Sonya
9. Monty Python - Quest for the Holy Grail
10. Army of Darkness
11. Excalibur
12. Braveheart
13. Highlander (Original)
14. Legend
15. Robin Hood 1991 K. Costner
16. Robin Hood 1957 E. Flynn
17. Jason and the Argonauts
18. Kull
19. Princes Bride
20. The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad
Honorable Mention:
1. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad
2. Dracula - Prince of Darkness 1954 C. Lee
3. Bram Stokers Dracula
4. Willow
5. Mummy
6. Dune
7. Big Trouble Little China
8. Flash Gordon
9. Wizard of Oz
10. The Golden Child
11. Evil Dead II
Top Disappointments:
1. Dungeons and Dragons the Movie
2. Dragonheart
3. Highlander 2 (Not the renegade version)
4. Evil Dead I
5. Calling all Monsters
6. Dark Crystal
7. Labyrinth
I think this pretty much is a complete collection of the best fantasy movies in the last 50-60 years. I have left off some boarder line Sci-Fi and Horror titles that are great movies but did not fit on the list that I was creating.
Thanks

Hmm... I'm a bit curious as to why you decided heavy metal wasn't fantasy but Highlander was? Both good movies... but both are a mix of fantasy with futurism in Heavy Metal's case and Modern Day stuff in Highlander's. Same with Army of Darkness... another kickass movie, but it starts and ends in the present day... not to mention killing skeletons with a car. (Actually the alternate ending on the DVD ends in the future... but that's another story.

I don't have anything to contribute to the list except mentioning that for sci-fi you can't go wrong with "The Abyss: Special Edition" in my opinion one of if not the best movies ever made- its special effects are on par with anything made today, the plot is astounding and the acting is stupendous. The DVD of the film is the best I have ever seen, with two discs- one for the movie and a few special features and the second for a whole bunch of other features about the movie- the DVD makes excellent use of all the abilities of the DVD system including angles and soundtracks, as well as subtitle commentary so you dont have to watch the movie with no sound to get all the pertinent information like you have to do with the Matrix. Oh and as for the real reason I decided to post this:
Medieval: not Mid-evil or Midievil, there is no hyphen or space, it doesnt refer to really sinister sound file formats or have anything to do with how "evil" the time period was, it just means "Middle Age"
