Gender issue in HP

Postby Xyd » Wed Aug 01, 2001 7:19 pm

You emit a fierce battle cry, and charge right into her, bodyslamming him DOWN!

Your bash at a mysterious woman sends her sprawling.
A mysterious woman is stunned!

Actually it looks like the bodyslam message, the mob's gender is fine. Many combat, spell and proc messages have mistakes in them.

Gee I really didn't notice that thanks Garosh!

I'll repeat - the mob's gender is fine. The mistake is in the bodyslam message. No matter what you bodyslam, it will always show HIM. Just like the proc for many weapons will show as hitting HIM regardless of whether was actually a him, her or it.. If you want, I can explain it again.

Cherzra whaps you upside the head - DOH.

Grammatically correct actually. As odd as it sounds, 'him' or 'he' can also be used as neuter pronouns in reference to either gender. It's nothing most of us would read in literature or use, since it -is- proper to use the references 'her' or 'she'.

Are you sure about that? I'm pretty positive him is for references to 'he' only.

It is only gramatically correct when refering to a category, like humans in general, IIRC?

Even so, I *know* it isn't correct to switch between the two in one sentance.
