Can we stop getting butchered by rabbits, mosquitos, bunnies, pixies, ants? This is just stupid.

Yeah its ridiculous.. I rolled a yuan-ti for shits and giggles and was smited by moths, mosquitos and butterflies. I mean, I dont mind being smited up a lot in a difficult hometown, but could it be poisonous snakes or something? Mosquitos?! Feh..

Reminds me of the time I as a young barbarian walked into the woods near GN and decided to take on a big green toad. After my prompt death, I started to wonder how exactly does a toad kill a full grown barbarian?

It would seem to me that all classes could just as well start at level 10. It is not like we'd be missing a great gaming experience, whether you're a newbie or old time player. Rather, might actually avoid alot of "sillyness" and frustrations (from newbies and old timers alike) if embarrassing deaths to mosquitos or little white bunnies did not occur. The game world would more closely match to what most people expect it to be. These sort of incidents tend to kill any kind of "immersion" alot of people are looking for in a text MUD these days. Nothing puts off a newbie better than a completely unrealistic death to something as ridiculous as a frog, moth or a mosquito.

hahaha
Should we just name them all orc warriors?
It's just your imagination that these are small friendly smiling bunnies and toads.
They are really giant breeds of vicious chemically altered toads and bunnies Image
Swarm of mosquitoes? You must think there is three or four there, swarm means 5,000 of them!
Anyway I'm just rambling Image
Hyssk is one of the hardest hometowns there is, goodlucks!

I suppose once you get to level 5 or so you can smite all 5000 mosquitos with a couple swings of your sword eh? Image

well one possibility would be to give level 1-5 ppl a slightly hp/hit/dam/ac bonus so they don't die so easily to silly things.. for levels 5-10 you start losing those bonuses slowly.. till 10 you are just like a regular level 10.. (each level would only slightly outweigh the loss of the bonus, as far as hps go)

i don't think that sounds right though, i think things are ok as they are.. but killing things at level 1 with non-warrior classes is extremely difficult wearing all newbie gear and might help us get fresh blood in if it was slightly easier.. for levels 1-10.. im not talking twink leveling.. but just so you can kill level 1-3 things w/o dieing or nearly dieing at level 1-3.. (especially for mage classes) some ppl really enjoy a game that takes awhile to get the hang of and into and appreciate the challenge, but it turns a lot of ppl off..(if i didn't have help from friends irl playing sojourn when i first started im sure i wouldn't have stuck with it)

some ppl might think this will encourge whiney players who throw a fit when they die and things like that.. but those ppl will be weeded out from 10-20 and should leave only the decent players for 30+.. just my opinions..

they could just change the mob name, would that make you feel better about being smited? Hyssk is an bad bad town, causes a lot of deaths as it was designed too.

Are you suggesting they tone it down? considering all the negatives to being a yuanti, perhaps it should be made much friendlier. Course id vote for making Yuan's a better race rather than downgrading the hometown. All the gear from the island was raped too (rightly so, though i wonder if it just needed to be flagged Yuan only instead).

naw, they should just give newbies a bug zapper and a can of raid to use as weapons... Would solve all our problems right?

There is nothing harsh about most any of the other evil hometowns at all. Especially the Underdark ones which I think is funny. I've only been in troll and ogre towns a couple times. I remember there being a couple aggros but they were all out of the way. Ixarkon, Gloomhaven, Dubloth Kyor, nothing. There is one place in DK with some spiders and skeleton aggros that you can probably take out at lvl 2.

I don't know why I'm talking. Sometimes I just imagine we're all having a live conversation and in live conversations you don't neccessarily have to have a reason for stating stuff. Image

Hyssyk is extremely harsh. For Yuan-Ti mages, it is next to impossible to survive there. You'd really need to stick around the newbie area till you're level 4, then venture in the hometown. Lack of hitpoints and ac makes fighting those mosquito swarms a joke, but the real killer is the extremely high costs of getting a slave to get off the island.

If it's lowered significantly (try in the range of 1-2 plats), dying wouldn't be so bad. Image

umm hyssk is harsh iziz. you got small, level 20ish, tracking agros wandering town. not to mention all the other small agros, and i dont know how many times folks have tried to reloc'd from hyssk after dieing and ended up underwater and drowning.

Ghore is not easy to get out of, i almost got my ass kicked by the lizardmen and whole field of small agros at level 30. The lizardmen track too and are not easy when your a nekkid warrior.

and BT/CP/BS/GN you have those agros that guards assist but at least that shit doesnt track. CP/GN i dont know if anything there is agro anyone who can choose it for a hometown.

Hyssk isn't that hard to navigate. I got my snake all the way up to 13 before even leaving, and I basically found my own way to the turtle. You just need to learn which mobs are aggro, and seriously, the best way to do that is take your level "3" snake, wander around, if something attacks you, recall and remember which mob it was that attacked you, and backscroll to so you know what they look like when you scan into the next room. I don't know of any aggro 20 tracking mobs, maybe it's cause I didn't wander into CERTAIN areas, but other than that, that place is actually pretty dang nice for exp, and making 10 plat ain't that hard if you learn how to make cash from your kills....I don't know if it's common knowledge about selling food, but you can easily make enough to buy a 10 plat slave. I think the only thing that I would suggest is not to have the slaves aggroed by citizens....almost lost my slave to that.....now how is THAT for a slap in the face, surviving hyssk to get 10p to get off, and some citizen decides to kill your slave!

Leave my hometown alone. if you ain't got the skillz, you don't deserve to play a yuanti. Surviving Hyssk is easy. You just need to know what to do. The innates work wonders when you are young. If your goal is to get off the island quick then you'll find Hyssk a tough hometown. However, if you goal is to learn and love the yuanti race, then you'll find Hyssk a wonderful place.

I'm gonna assume, Wargo, that you leveled up your char in hyssk soon after the wipe, if not immediately after. That being the case, you had the luxury of grouping with other snakes. For a solo level 1 mage with pure newbie eq, that place is pretty damn tough. I'm not saying it shouldn't be tough.. just saying that it is.

Corth, I leveled to 5 all by myself and then tanked for everyone in hyssk until 6. Then I twinked some cash and walked myself to DK. High Agi + Scaleskin + Armor = awesome tank Image If you think it was easy because i am a cleric? My buddie leveled an illusionist on the island all by himself until level 10 when i walked him out. Hyssk is fine the way it is. Only complain may be to speed up the turtle or fix the vault Image
